I'm giving a presentation today entitled "How to piss off the Music Industry for Fun and Profit" at Queen Mary, University of London, Department of Electrical Engineering, aka The Centre for Digital Music.
Well, actually they are using the more conservative title of
"Magnatune, an online record label that isn't evil"
but the presentation is the same either way.
Here is an abstract of my presentation.
John Buckman, who is the CEO/Founder of Magnatune.com, will speak about the music industry in the new Internet reality: piracy, P2P, RIAA lawsuits and the increasing irrelevance of the old music industry system. Buckman will explain how music licensing is actually where the money is made in the music business, how it works, and what it might look like in five years. Buckman will also explain the design decisions behind Magnatune's business model and web site, giving you an inside look at how a next-generation music business works.
I'll be giving the same presentation again in a month (June 11), at the Academy for Contemporary Music, which I think of as "Rock U" (as in University). To their credit, the ACM went with the more edgy presentation title.
